Deerhound Club Northern Limited Show 2018

Thank you to the Deerhound club for inviting me to judge the breed in Scotland & to the Northern Committee & team for their organisation, wonderful warm welcome & hospitality. A huge thank you to the very able Steward Peter Grant who had a massive battle with the stormy elements but coped admirably rescuing any flying results. Finally thank you to all the exhibitors who braved the weather (assuring me you are all used to those heavy Atlantic storms causing havoc) & for allowing me the honour & privilege to go over your wonderful hounds. Just to say that I was impressed by the standard of condition, fitness & harshness of coats & overall movement in all the hounds hidden up here in the North.

PUPPY DOG (2,1)

1 GILLIE'S DORRATOR ORBIT

Well grown youngster, crisp coat, pleasing

head with correct ears, eyes & bite. Strong neck flowing into good lay of shoulder showing angulation, lovely fore chest & a decent return of upper arm. Underline & toplines curving in all the right places showing fall away to decent tail set. A joyful, happy pup on the move who did manage to show a few good steps in profile & straight coming and going. BPD

NOVICE DOG (5,1)

A strong class with much to like about each dog.

1 CARLIN'S KALEGINY FUSILIER AT THORSMOOR

Pleasing balanced construction for one so young, showing correct head and expression, good ears, dark eyes & bite. His strong neck flowed to good lay of shoulder & front angulation & fore chest, pleasing underline to tuck up, spring of rib & top line to fall away & tail set.Good bone in legs, rear angulation & width in 1st & 2nd thighs, neat, straight feet. Held top line in movement, straight coming and going with an active stride. He is a youngster & has plenty of time to develop.

2 BARCLAY'S COTHERSTONE FINLAGGAN

Another young dog of pleasing overall solid construction & balance. Dark crisp, harsh coat. Lovely correct head. Critique very much as for the first dog but I preferred the feet and stifles of first dog. good active easy strides and straight.

3 CROSSAN'S BRYLACH PRIONNSA

RES SWANSON'S COTHERSTONE DALLAS DHU OF ALTIMARLACH

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (2,0)

1 BARCLAY'S COTHERSTONE FINLAGGAN

2 SEAMEN'S ARRACHOGAIDH BHAIDENACH

A smaller more compact hound with lots of coat which isn't doing him any favours, as hiding some pleasing construction also carrying a little more weight than is helpful. He has some good conformation that I could just about feel. A lovely gentle temperament in the ring who could offer so much more. Moved soundly and straight.

POST GRADUATE DOG (3,1)

1 SHARP'S KILLOETER SKYE

Solid balanced dog – a little long in the body. Masculine but not coarse, correct head, Strong neck into good lay of shoulder, pleasing forechest with return of upper arm. Strong legs with flat bone, good slope to pasterns. Tidy feet. Deep brisket and spring of rib with good under/ top lines showing curves & fall away from croup to good tail set. Lovely easy active & true steps both in profile & coming/going. RBD

2 DONALDSON'S EILEANIRGH KING WHISPERER

A slightly smaller dog than 1, darker coat, much to like about him & generally fair balance. Lovely correct head & expression, but does not have quite the fore angulation of the first dog. Pleasing hind angulation though giving him drive on the move.

OPEN DOG (8,3)

1 CARTMELL'S DRAWING DOWN THE SUN

I liked this dog straight away. He showed overall balance, curves & movement. A handsome hound showing correct head & expression with pleasing neck & front assembly, flat bone in the legs & sloping pasterns. Good under/top line & slope over croup to tail set. Lovely movement & showing drive that is easy active, true & straight. Continued to run out well to secure BD & BIS

2 MORTON & MORGAN'S COTHERSTONE COLD STEEL

A solid well-constructed dog in profile. Masculine but correct head, strong neck into nicely onstructed front, but a littIe wide in fore chest I felt. Would like a more rounded top line as slightly wide over the back. Well angulated quarters front & rear. I just felt the run out was a little too hurried & front feet were brushing together when coming towards me. He has a lot to give and can still give his best.

3 Dr MCKINNON'S ALMONDBANK REAL DEAL MCNEIL FOR FINGON

RES FOY'S D0RRATOR FRANKLIN

VHC HEAP'S JAMIE OF FINTALLOCH

PUPPY BITCH (3,1)

1 GILLIE'S DORRATOR ENO

A very pretty 8m old bitch showing all that is correct. Pretty head showing neat ears, dark eyes

& correct bite. Lovely curvy neck flowing into good lay of shoulder, pleasing return of upper arm & a sound fore chest. Strong legs with flat bone of good width & good pastern angles. Neat tight feet. Curvy under/top lines leading to good tuck up & fall away over croup. Sound active & straight movement. BPIS

2 JACKSON'S KILLOETER UNIQUE 9m

Another lovely bitch showing all the right angles, curves & movement. As above but a little hunched & tense then relaxed more at end. So close to the first, results could change on another day Very, very close between the 2 puppies

NOVICE BITCH (5,2)

1 STEADMAN'S KILLOETER TARANSAY AT COINGHLAIS

Lovely feminine, shapely bitch with so much to like. Beautiful head with correct neat ears, eyes & teeth. Shapely neck set onto well-constructed fore quarters, showing the lay of shoulders & return of upper arm & depth of fore chest. Deep brisket and good spring of rib leading to pleasing under/upper lines to tuck up & rise over loins to fall away over croup to correct tail set. Foreleg bone broad & flat, pleasing pasterns and feet. Second thigh could be a little broader but she is still young and has time on her side. Moved freely & active holding her top line on the move.

2 HIGH-SMITH'S APHRODITE PEARL FROM INGLEBY

A much lighter finer type hound. Pleasing head, dark eye, ears could be a little smaller but beautifully folded & carried. Nicely shaped & muscled neck leading to decent lay of shoulder & return of upper arm. Fair forechest. Would like to see a little more depth of brisket & a slightly shorter forearm. Curvy under/top lines showing rise over loins & a good fall away. Had some width to hips & moved straight & active whilst keeping good top line in self carriage. Young with time to fill out.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH (6,2)

1 STEADMAN'S KILLOETER TARANSAY AT COINGHLAIS

See notes in previous class

2 LINDSAY'S CELTICMOON SHADOW MAGIC AT SILVERTHYME

A longer coated, light grey, almost 5y bitch. Pleasing head, ears could have been a little tidier but were small & nicely folded, dark softly gentle eye but soon had 'that' typical look when ready to chase as something flew by on the wind. Good neck and fair lay of shoulder showing reasonable return of upper arm & good depth of forechest. Deep brisket, spring of rib accompanied by the curvy lines leading to tuck up, rise over loin & fall away to tail set. Good flat bone in legs, broad in thighs, would like to see feet a little bigger. Straight movement coming/going also kept topline in profile.

3 SEAMEN'S COTHERSTONE SURPRESA TO ARRACHOGAIDH

RES PAGE'S BEARDSWOOD ULTIMATE DREAM

VHC SHADOW HUNTRESS AT SILVERTHYME

POST GRADUATE BITCH (11,8)

1 ROBERTSON'S CHUILINN LOREDANA

A lighter frame type, but still feminine. A good head ticking all the boxes, a decent strong neck set onto a fair shoulder, would like a little more return of upper arm & forechest. Brisket could be a little deeper however she is still young & has time to develop further & is showing curvy under/top lines, fore limbs strong but would like to see more thigh behind and tighter feet. Moved easily & kept her topline.

2 ARTEMIS RUBY FROM INGLEBY

A feminine shapely bitch, correct in many ways. Beautiful head set onto a good reach of neck, well laid shoulders showing pleasing forechest & angulation. Broad flat bone & slope to pasterns. Curvy lines to tuck up & rise over loins to fall away over croup to good tail set. Deep brisket and spring of rib. Strong 1st & 2nd thighs. Kept topline on the move & straight coming & going.

3 RANDALL'S KALEGINY REIVER

OPEN BITCH (9,2)

1 SWANSON'S BROGUE OF ALTIMARLACH

Shapely, balanced ,well-constructed bitch with a lot to like about her. Correct head ticking all the boxes & set on to a powerful neck which in turn is set onto well-laid shoulders & pleasing return of upper arm, strong forechest. Wide flat bone in fore legs leading to slope of pastern and neat feet. Good depth of brisket, lovely spring of rib & sporting curvy upper/underline to tuck up & rise over loin & fall away over croup to good tail set, strong 1st and 2nd thighs. BB BOS RBIS.

2 MORTON MORGAN'S KALEGINY KEEPSAKE

Much to like about this pretty bitch… very close to the winner in many ways so a lot of the above applies. However I felt that this bitch had just a little too much covering at the top of her shoulders & along her back. Lovely movement in profile but I felt it a little hurried so front feet turning in a little when coming towards me, straight behind going away. RB

VETERAN BITCH

1. MCKINNON’S MOIREACH TRESHNISH

A lovely lady almost 11yrs young. Able to give a good account of herself in the ring. Although slim in her body, her structure was still very sound. Gentle expression, kind dark eye, neat black ears & sporting a good set of teeth, neck correct onto well laid shoulder, broad & deep fore chest & a decent return of upper arm. Deep in brisket & sporting under/upper curves to tuck up and slight rise over loins but still has that classic fall away to good tail set. Legs & movement sound. An honour to go over a stately lady. Given to the eldest.

2 ROBERTSON'S CHUILINN CAMELLIA

Another lovely curvy lady, close to the winner so all the above applies. Moved out well and sound.

3 SEAMEN'S BREESFALT ISABELLA TO ARRACHOGAIDH

The youngest of the ladies. Again curvy and moved well with many of the attributes of the 1st placed.
